Spring jobs that cut your energy bills

Do the energy jobs in spring and feel the benefit before next winter.

Spring is a good time for energy jobs: installers are less busy than in autumn and you’ll feel the benefit before next winter. Savings below are Energy Saving Trust estimates for a typical home in Great Britain.

Loft insulation

Topping up to the recommended depth is one of the cheapest ways to cut heat loss. An uninsulated home can lose about a quarter of its heat through the roof.

Draught-proofing

Seal gaps around doors, windows and floorboards, but never block air bricks or vents. It can save around £55 a year.

Heating controls

A room thermostat, a timer and radiator valves let you heat only the rooms you use. Fitting all three can save about £100 a year.

LED bulbs

Swap the bulbs you use most first. Replacing the last halogen spotlights with LEDs saves around £45 a year.
