Getting started with a home improvement project
Plan it, budget for it and stay safe while you do it.
Look before you leap
Walk round your home and list what needs doing. Put safety and damage first: leaks, cracks, damp, loose stair rails and faulty electrics come before decorating.
Set a budget and add a buffer
Price materials, tools and any professional help, then add about a fifth for the things you find once you start.
Check what needs permission
Some work needs planning permission or building regulations approval, and listed buildings have extra rules. If you rent, ask your landlord in writing before you change anything.
Get the electrics checked
Around 27% of people have swapped sockets or switches themselves, and 30% haven’t had their home electrics checked by a qualified electrician in over ten years.
Institution of Engineering and Technology, April 2026An inspection before you start is money well spent, especially in an older home.
Dress for the job
Wear old clothes and sturdy shoes, take off rings and watches, and use goggles, gloves and a dust mask when sanding, drilling or cutting.
Give it time
Most jobs take longer than you think. Plan a weekend, not an afternoon, and finish one room before starting the next.
